I made the 1-hour trip to Dr. Munn's office to see Dr. Hammond--she was an absolute doll! Maybe it was just because she was my first rat vet, but whatever it was, I totally adored her! Gentle with the rats, and seemed very knowledgeable. :)

I got Doxy, Baytril and Metacam (Doxy 0.02ml, Baytril 0.06ml, and Metacam 0.04ml, if I remember correctly! XD The medicines are in the fridge at the moment) for the two boys. They're very sneaky at pushing the syringe away at the very last second lol. I think I got at least 1/3 of the medicine on my hands, rather than in their mouths... And I'm pretty sure another 1/3 was smeared on their paws and chins. They looked VERY happy with themselves... :p Hopefully I'll get better at this.

What do you guys do if you don't have an extra set of hands to hold your rats captive while you're trying to give them medicine?

I mix my meds with:

No sugar apple sauce
Organic peanut butter
Small amount of Olive Oil to make the PB not sticky.

I mix up a small amount and put it in the fridge ..each day I get a spoon and measure out the meds and mix it in on the spoon.

My guys LOVE it! they go gaga!

Thanks! :D

I tried the PB + Olive Oil this morning (without the meds to see if they like it), and they turned their noses up at it LOL! I also tried plain apple sauce, and yogurt as well, but they didn't like either. :(

They're so picky! Loki and Indy don't seem to like strawberries, watermelons, any sort of nuts, or blueberries. o_O A friend of mine told me that was really strange, because all the rats she's owned loved it all!

I guess it's back to trying to get them to take the meds through the syringe. >>

Strange, my guys go gag for the Olive Oil and PB. Pick up some jar baby food (Blueberry are bananna are the favs here for meds) ..I also used to get a small amount of bread and put the meds in the middle of it and roll it up, and they would eat it all up!
Or try adding it to nesquick strawberry syrup ..thats another fav!

I mix up a bit of baby cereal with soy milk, and then add the meds. I have to make up extra as a decoy so all the non-medicated ratties don't try and steal the meds!
