George was out for his normal exercise this morning
when i put them back into the cage i thought he was being overly aggressive
over his treats...but as the morning has gone on we heard him squeeking
and when we went to see what was wrong and take him out he went nuts...
he sounded as if we were murdering him....lots of squeeking and wriggling about
we checked him over he seems phsicaly fine. so we put him on the floor...he runs from one place
to another but still has a pained squeek and jump every so often...he is eating fine and is aware
he comes to his calls ...luckily we had an appointment with the Vets booked for this afternoon
with Henrys breathing problems...but this is such a sudden reaction from George. I just wonder
if anyone had any advice ... The Vet will prob treat him with pain meds but i'd love to know
what the underlying prob is...will catch up when been to vets later.

I just had something similar with my Bronco... I finally noticed his little wrist is ever so slightly swollen. Check his limbs, he might have sprained something.
Another thought, bladder infections are quite painful as well.

He has been out and about since we noticed so as not to get aggressive
with the other boys...his abdomen does feel a little harder than norm but
he wont let us check properly...so bladder sounds a good possibility
his limbs seem fine and he has no problem with movement
apart from his yelps of pain he seems otherwise normal
Vets in 30 mins so will update afterwards..cheers Jo

George has been to the Vets... The Vet was puzzled by his condition as
he was fully checked over and nothing seemed amiss...he has been given
a Steroid anti pain injection and to watch his condition for the next 4 days
Henry was given a long term steroid inj for his breathing condition but
the Vet found what he considers to be an internal tumour which would
account for his weight loss :(
Ben has a abcess on side of his face so he has had a Baytril antibiotic inj
but if it fails to clear up within the next few days he will have to be
addmitted in to have it lanced under anasthetic
We have also got frontline spray to treat our 13 boys with...
So George's condition still a mystery

The Frontline was recomended to me by my vet...it is the 100ml spray bottle...
dosage was 4x pumps onto the fur and gently rub in.
Wish i had seen this thread earlier as we have now treated all 13 boys this way
I will ring the Vet tomorrow and voice your concerns
after looking at various sites on this subject..some are saying its ok others not
we have previously used Spot on drops with little success

I hope that this wont result in a disaster will be gutted if we have inadvertantly
poisoned our boys on a vets advice.

found this article
http://www.freewebs.com/miscrats/parasites.htm
so it looks like the UK Frontline is a weaker version of the US frontline
but will be watching my boys very carefully over next few days

This looks to be a contriversial issue
I have been told about Invermectin but to be very weary

I found this info on here http://www.freewebs.com/miscrats/parasites.htm

TOXICITY OF IVERMECTIN

It has been found that there are clear species differences in the central nervous system to the toxicity of Avermectin (which is the class of drugs that Ivermectin belongs to), rodents being the most sensitive. A dose of 0.2mg/kg in mice and slightly higher in rats can result in signs of central nervous system toxicity such as tremors and ataxia. ( Tremor - unintentional rhythmic muscle movement. Ataxia - gross lack of coordination of muscle movements).

In such clinical tests as those performed on Rhesus monkeys, at an oral dose of 2 or 8 mg/kg, the only toxic effect observed was emesis (vomiting), bear in mind that rats cannot vomit.

I would personally avoid sprays of any kind to prevent potential respiratory irritation, especially if it's chemical like a parasite treatment. I hope your vet keeps the information you'll give him in mind and I'll keep all of your boys in my prayers.

No adverse effects noticed today with the frontline spray though please keep in mind that
this is the UK Frontlineabout half the strength of US version...Vet says that allthough it can
be toxic if incorrect dosage used If kept at correct dosage it can be very effective, and a spray
is less likeley to be overdosed than drop form.
As for George he is not showing any sign of pain today...its just one of those Mysteries
Ben's abcess came to a head today and we were able to clean out the gunky stuff and sterilise the area
we will keep him on baytrill for the rest of the week to prevent any infection
Henry is still with us but we are just keeping him comfortable and using antibiotics but with an internal
tumour the prognosis is not too good :(

Thanks for you thoughts and concerns
