Hey all,

I just wanted to know if fur lost on both front paws / arms is suppose to be alarming. I know the rat who has this carries hairless genes but she's nowhere near hairless. Just noticed it today. She's a black mask dumbo. 3 months old. Female. She acts normally except for the being afraid of my MrFreeze.

It sounds like she is barbering herself. Some rats will do this, if they are bored, or just have a bad habit like chewing our nails. Its when they barber interesting patterns on their cagemates...

My Anna Banana has started to self barber her front paws too.

It's usually an indicator of stress, anxiety, boredom... hard to stop them or even to find what's causing it. I suspect for my Bananagirl that it's the new kittens in the house. :sad3:

Our Griffin does this as well and really far up the shoulders too. I also noticed sometimes he will barber his back legs as well. A lot of our girls were doing this too because they were stressed out with everything going on here at the moment.

Sid barbers. he started off with his front feet, then it went all the way up his chest as far as he can chew. He now does his sides aswell (although i think that was more to do with an infection he had). He has been doing it for over a year now

Lily does this too, we figure it's because she had a huge self confidence issue or something like that. That's solved, but now it's a habit for her. Now we just say she likes short sleeves.
