Hi! I want to stat a new thread (don't know if one for this already exists) about fun things do do with/ make for your rat.
Here, I'll start:

1) Find a bunch of boxes and cut holes at the bottom and top of each, then stack them on top of each other from biggest to smallest. Now tape them but make sure there is a hole going through inside them that you think your rat can fit through so they can climb from story to story.
2) Create a rat proof play area and put a bunch of tunnels and safe toys in there for them to play with.
3)Teach them to "spin":Start by holding a treat in front of their noses, then say "spin" and drag it in a circle close to their side (make sure they follow the treat), when they complete a circle, click your tongue or a clicker trainer and give them the treat. As they get used to doing this you can eventually take your hand further away from their bodies until it has disappeared out of their sight while still saying "spin" and clicking. Remember to always click! Soon enough they will do it when you randomly command them to spin (though this may take a few week). :joy:
Hope you enjoy and post your own fun things! :laugh4:

I definately want to teach my boys to spin! Now if only i can hold their attention for more than 10 seconds...

I was sorting through a big bag of socks tonight and ended up with a large pile of them to be binned, when the boys had their out time i hid some yogies in random socks and threw them all in a box, they were digging about in there for quite a while and it was very entertaining to see socks flying everywhere :giggle:

Those are awesome tips!

I took an old tote/container and made a whole in it and stuffed it with pieces of fleece and balls and other small toys. They like to go dig in it once in a while.
Another fun thing... put some cheerios on a rope and hang the rope just out of reach and let them work together at bringing it down.
Get a feather on a stick and have the rats run after it.
Have pieces of newspaper around during out time and watch them cart them off into the cage.

Newspaper + Tissue Boxes + Hidden Treats = Rat Party

Algernon loves to hoard newspaper/cardboard yet she rejects the soft, natural bedding. Once I decided to line their cage with newspaper, and she decided to take every single sheet, rip it up, and stuff it into one of their little houses - she ended up covering the whole top shelf.

I also like to use spare long pieces of cardboard and make ramps throughout the cage; my rats love to perch on things and I can stick treats in between the bars of the cage so they have to try and pull them out.
My rats also adore boxes of any sort; especially the long soda can boxes that had twelve in; they use it as storage and customize it with their teeth; they also love to try to move it around the cage. Watching them drag anything and everything around their house is the most amusing and adorable thing I have ever seen.

Oh another thing I like to do, stick napkins through the bars, jut a little bit and watch them drag it all in and finding that perfect spot in the cage for it.
