It's hard for a single person to eat a wide variety of different veggies, but I try.
and I try even harder now that I've got rats that can eat these too ,
but I still end up with tons of left overs that will go bad if I don't make them into something and freeze it.
What I sometimes do for myself is make up some soup and freeze that.
One day I got the idea :idea2: to make up some "soup" for the rats, after all, they love baby food and soup is sorta like baby food, right?
Plus baby food is soooo expensive!
I tossed some cauliflower and potatoes and peas together and added some of the water that I'd used to poach some fish, plus a tiny bit of the fish, and put this all in the blender and pureed it.
It was more soupy than baby food, but my blender is a real cheap one that's mostly good for making smoothies etc. It won't blend things that are too thick.
I think there was something else in that initial recipe as well but I can't remember what it was........
maybe some leftover green beans?
anyway I poured the soup into ice cube trays and froze it, then popped them out and put them in freezer bags.
I'd take out a few veggie cubes in the morning and let them thaw in the fridge, and then I'd warm them up in the microwave just before serving
My girls just loved it!
Now I'm working on other veggie combos and thinking about maybe adding some beans or brown rice?
also I get canned oysters for them, I could use the water from them to add to the "soup" for flavor.
(what I do with the oysters is lay them out on wax paper on a cookie sheet and freeze them singly, then put those in freezer bags so I can thaw out just a couple at a time because they only get oysters maybe once a week or less.)
I could even puree an oyster in with the veggies.
these are the fresh veggies that I get most often:
potatoes
sweet potatoes
carrots
tomatoes
summer squash & zucchini
sweet red, orange or yellow peppers
cauliflower
broccoli (but there's never any leftovers, we LOVE our broccoli!!)
kale
romaine lettuce
I'd love your suggestions on which ones to combine to make the ratties their veggie soup, and ideas on anything else that could be added to make it healthier but not fattening.
I can also add frozen veggies to it- I generally buy my peas, Brussels sprouts, spinach, winter squash and cauliflower frozen
and I almost always have canned tomatoes, tom sauce, beans (usually kidney and pinto plus baked beans)
if I add rice, beans or other starchy things like potatoes, those should be added in very small amounts, don't you think?
like in this combo:
tomatoes, brown rice, boiled beans and spinach
I'd used small amnts of the beans and rice and go heavy on the toms and spinach, right? otherwise it'd be too starchy?
also I don't buy much chicken but if I'd made some chicken soup for me I could put in bits of chicken and strained, fat removed, chicken broth, perhaps?
my rats tend to the heavy side so I want this to be a healthy treat for them.
