I've been noticing that my rats have been scratching more frequently. I also see more hair around the cage. Upon thorough inspection, I haven't really found anything of concern... as of yet. No rash, no redness, no nothing. Really couldn't see anything out of the norm from what was visible. Can't be the diet, they're on HT 2014. Could be mites.

What is the best course of action to take right now? I'd like to hold off on that vet trip for the time being if I can do something about it. Basically, I've been noticing more frequent scratching than usual and more hair around the cage.

If any of you with experience to these kinds of problems can advise me step by step, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

When they are scratching, do you see them also licking their paw? If so that would be grooming.
Look for tiny scabs on the rats. If you don't find any then I wouldn't treat for mites. If you do suspect mites though, Revolution is the best thing for it. But you need a vet prescription to get it. Don't wait too long either because mites can really bring down the immune system.

Hmm, I will continue to look into this. I know they definitely lick their paws sometimes to groom. But fact of the matter is I see more hair lying around than usual and more frequent scratching. I don't see or feel any scabs though.

Thanks alot. I will keep an eye out.

I've never noticed any "hair lying around" from my rats before... I'd be concerned about this, honestly.
