So this morning when I was giving the girls some food I noticed that Franka was eating the blocks and had a hard time taking them. I checked her mouth and found that her left front tooth had broken off! wonderful *sighs* and the other tooth was very very long yet again. Dr. Gallon said she had trimmed the tooth but I dunno it didn't looked trimmed to me...anyways Ang and I trimmed it a bit but it's not the same length as the other tooth.
You can only see her left tooth if you lift her lip up a bit. It's short but it kinda looks like the normal size comared to the other girls. I'm wondering if we should try and cut the other tooth to that size too? When I called the vet she said to try and file it down. But that is soo freakin hard and Franka does not like it. We did the whole rat burito thing and that still didn't work really when we tried filing the tooth down.
So I'm wondering what's the best way to go about this? We've never had a broken tooth before.

I'll have to wait for Ang to get home and try trimming it again. I wonder how her tooth would have broken off? I tried looking for it but couldn't find it. Teeth issues stress me out :wallbang:

Teeth issues stress me out too... and I haven't had any with my girls yet!! *knocks wood*

Sounds to me that it needs to be cut down, and maybe a quick filing of both to make sure they're as even as possible. Poor Franka!

I know she's had quite a time with these crazy teeth and her tumor. At least she's pretty much all healed up! The stitches are starting to come out on their own now. I need to trim one of them 'cause it's quite long. SHe's still a happy girl though and was enjoying some crushed up soggy lab blocks. I don't know how she can eat it, soggy lab blocks smell so gross lol

Well we were able to trim a tiny bit more off of Franka's tooth but it's still not the same height as the one that broke off. The one that had broken off is quite high up and I'm afraid we're going to hurt her if we trim any more.
Should we take her to Dr. Gallon and see if she can trim it? Or just let it be and just keep trimming the one tooth so the other one has time to catch up?
:gaah: I so don't like teeth issues it stressed me out 'cause I know this will make her teeth go really crazy now. Poor girl. At least she was trying to eat a carrot today and some cucumber.

You could bring her to your vet and see if he can trim all the teeth really low or you could simply keep trimming the one to match the other. I sometimes have Nessie done at the vet's but most times I do it myself. When I do it myself, trimming the one that is too long, I pretty much have to check her every other day and do it often but when the vet trims them all down low, I can leave it alone for about a month or so.
But... Nessie is less stressed when I do it. Also, when they get trimmed very low, the rats have trouble eating solid foods so that's stressful on them too, being put on soft foods and them constantly trying to eat the hard food.

Interestingly enough, one of my rats had a tooth break off. She hadn't been grinding for a while and her teeth had gotten really long, but the one that broke off wasn't as short as it sounds like Franka's was. Still, it was about 1/3 the length of the other one.
I didn't know what to do for her, but she was still eating and feeling her same old self, so I put some stuff for her and her sisters to chew on in the cage and within a few weeks her teeth were back to the same length! :)
She just chewed on what I gave her and "filed" the longer tooth down on her own while the other one grew back.
I just had her to the vet a couple days ago and asked for them to take a look at her teeth and she was given the thumbs up!

I hope Franka's better now!! :)

That's good to know myac, I often panicked when I would see their teeth misaligned, never thinking to give them time to correct it themselves.

myac I think you gave Franka the good vibe because her teeth corrected themselves! For the first time since we got her her teeth look normal! How awesome is that!
We had trimmed the other one to try and match it up and we couldn't get it exactly the same because the other one was so short but so how the one that broke off caught up with the other one and now they're the same length and don't look like they'll need trimming again. She's doing it on her own which is great. It's so great to hear her bruxx again, she bruxx's a lot so when we didn't hear her bruxx we knew something was up.
So looks like it was a good thing the tooth broke!

Yay Franka! :happydance:
That's so good to hear!!! :)
I completely know the feeling of relief and euphoria you get when they're back to their old selves!
