My girl Fiona is going to get spayed this Monday. I am very scared and nervous for her. But she is young and I know it will benefit her greatly. It is an expensive procedure but I know it will be worth it. Better to prevent the tumors know rather then risk surgery at an older age if she does get mammary tumors.

I am wondering how long should it take her to heal from surgery?

When can I attempt to introduce her to Logan, my intact male? I'm thinking two weeks, what do others suggest?

Thanks

Should I switch the type of bedding in Fiona and Norman's cage while she is healing from surgery. Right now they are on carefresh. Would it be better to keep them on fleece?

Fiona is doing good! :joy: I was so worried when I didn't hear from the vets by noon that I phoned them. She was just coming out of her anesthetic . I was having horrible thoughts that maybe she didn't make it through the surgery, and was starting to doubt why I would risk her. :panic: But everything went smoothly  All the ladies at the clinic loved her, and they said she has eaten lots since the surgery as everyone keeps feeding her stuff from their lunch lol.

They gave me three days worth of metacam to give her twice daily. But they said to keep her by herself and in a small cage for 10 days! Is this necessary??? I'm not to worried about Norman wrestling with her or bothering her incision. And my smaller spare cage is being used by Logan. I could keep her in the cat carrier, but I think she will get depressed and stir crazy.

Advice would be much appreciated

I never separate mine after surgery,I find it is just to stressful for them but I have only had tumour removals done(I don't have girls).Hopefully someone with more experience with spays can give you some advice.

I usually don't separate after surgery, if necessary I will separate them with a buddy. Keep a close eye on her and Norman for a few hours and see how they are together, then go from there.

Thanks! I have them together. They aren't overly attached, so they said their hellos and then parted ways. They only cuddle on occasion. But they seem more content together then apart. I'm not to worried about them.

Now what about a small cage? Their cage is fairly large with one level and several hammocks. Is it okay for her to climb on them or should she be in a small cage with less things to climb on?

Thanks

I haven't had any issues with mobility or physical limitations after spays. If anything tumour removal incisions can be more problematic because they can be in odd spots.

Just a note on the bedding, if she happens to chew out her stitches or the incision opens then I would suggest switching to fleece (although I personally put all the rats on fleece after surgery) and her normal cage will be fine.

I did switch to fleece before I put her back in her cage. Plus with Norman's hind end not functioning 100% anymore I figure it would be nice for him too, as he spends a lot of his time in one of the hidey houses on the bottom of the cage. They cuddled for a bit when I first put them in their cage but about an hour later Fiona was back up in her hammock at the top of the cage.

Glad to report she seems back to her crazy self. I took her out this morning to give her the metacam and she was hanging off the side of the cage, chewing the bars. I took her out and she immediately jumped off the couch and headed straight to Logan's cage, which is in the corner of the living room on a chair. I tried to get her before she leaped onto the chair, but she beat me to the punch, lol. I quickly got her and gave her the meds, much to her protest, then put her in her cage.

So far her incision looks very clean and not irritated at all  The stitches are from the inside, so there are no threads sticking out for her to chew on.

I will try to get a picture of her incision site tonight.
