Erin my little shower hook fighter has been having on and off issues with her mouth for a while. I'm not sure if her mouth issues resulted from the shower hook incident (she got herself stuck in one and struggled to get out, fortunately I was there to help). We've been taking her in for routine tooth trims every two weeks. She has either bone or tooth behind the upper front teeth which was going well but last week the vet noticed it had started to grow. She had been on abs for an infection she had on the side of her mouth, but it had healed. But I noticed that the swelling on the side of her mouth had grown a little, but not much. We decided that we would wait for a bit to see how things progressed. She goes in every two weeks for a trim so we could keep an eye on what was happening.

Last night this is what we found:

She's had porpheryn on her eye since this all began due to what I believe is stress from her mouth. Talking to Shelagh it could either be a tumor or polyps. In the second picture you can see the red spot (irritation from the swelling) this AM it was purple. Wayne took her to the vet before work and I'm just waiting to hear from them. I hate her being there without me. True mom to form huh?

I will keep you guys updated.

WHEW, it was an abcess, so it's been lanced and drained and she's going to be coming home at 11:30. Now at least I can have a better day.

My poor girl, issues with her teeth, her mouth and now an abcess. I'm going to have to keep a close eye on her.

I do need help in keeping it from scabbing over as the vet said. I know there is a solution you can use, salt water?, with a syringe to clean it out, a warm compress to remove the scab. I need all the info as this is my first abcess.

The vet said it was deep and A LOT of pus, I'm really glad we took her in and it didn't burst at home while we were at work.

That abscess may be connected to some of her oral issues. I certainly hope it doesn't continue to be a problem for her!

Poor sweetie! So glad that Wayne got her to a vet so fast. Abscesses on the head are trouble, for people and for animals, so I guess you'll soon become an expert in flushing abscesses with saline.

Good luck. Kisses and banana mash to her.

Well abscesses are GROSS. Getting rid of the scab is a pain, it makes my mouth water with illness. We found that squirting with saline solution really helps to soften the scab. Melody is also great at helping with that. She pulls off the scab for us and then we do the flush. Erins not impressed but she's doing well.

Treatment is going well, Erin would tell you different, she thinks it's terrible. She hates getting the scab taken off, it must be tender for her. But the flushes shes really good for and she always gets her med/treat afterwards. Everytime she comes to the cage door to us so she forgives us. She's really good with her front paws and pushing the cloth away. She did this once at the vet during a tooth trim. She was giving Wayne dirty looks last night. :giggle: Last night we took the scab off and it looks like a dip in the spoon with no pus. So we are holding off this morning and going to see where we stand tonight. Erin will be pleased for the break. Poor girl, she goes through so much and is such a brave little one.

Sorry Moon, no pus last night so no piccy's.
