i currently let my gilrs out on the bed to run around with a few toys and tubes! but i want to do more for them. i cant let them out on the floor as i have 2 many wires.
what things can i put in their cage to keep them active? do rats like wheels?

I've always had a few in my colonies run the wheel. Some run it really hard too.
The best thing for your rat to make them active is lots of interaction with their humans. :D

Some of the things I have in my girls cage is:

- Bird ladders
- Hammacks
- Hanging tubes
- Recently just bought a pinata (it is a monkey made of carboard and covered in paper machea (sp?) and is hollow inside with a little hole you put treats in it, and you hang it up). My girls LOVED this.
- I also get a few paper towels, put treats in the middle, wrap the paper towles around the treats and tie a string at the top and hang it in there cage ..they go nuts for it ..my boys do to.
- Cat balls with bells (only for them to play with while supervised).
- Any form of stuffed cat toy ..without cat nip (I just bought lil stuffed mice yesterday ..and both the girls and boys carry them around, its so cute.
- A few loose paper towles ..my girls carry them right up to the top level of there cage and put them in their hammacks

they used to have a hammock but sweetpea and dhalia (my dumbos) just eat them lol! i put treats in toilet rolls and stuff it with tissue paper but hadnt thought of hanging them up! Stuffed toys is cool i didnt know they liked them!
and im definately getting them a wheel now!

I just get paper towels (not the role) and wrap them around some treats and tie a stright at the top where it bunches and hang it up. My girls never liked just the rolls either. But I tried somethign new last night I got toliet paper rolls and strips of paper towels ..dipped the paper towels in water and cover the whole roll, ends and everything. let it dry (takes about a day next to a heater). Once dry poke a whle in the end ..put some treats in ...get two strips of paper towel, dip them in water and cover teh hole ..not makeign the whole role too wet this time whee there is treats in there. Wait for it to dry again, tie some string around it and hang.

Also boil an egg, let it cool ..give it to them and watch them pick the shell off (they wont eat the shell, only the middle)

If you have hammock eaters, just pin up squares of fabric that you cut from old tshirts or blankets or whatever. They'll get chewed still but not hurt your wallet :) I always had good luck with fabric cut from old PJ pants.
