We've owned a rat for 2 weeks. Please refer to old post about her strange behaviour.

She lost her tail. All of it. It's just bone and blood. Nothing in the cage could have caused this. She's cold.

We don't have a rat vet anywhere close - especially not this late. She's convulsed once. Can anyone give us any idea of what to do?
We have a small animal vet who doesn't do rats though. We are from the country. We could humanely put her out of her misery if you all think that would be best.

We've got her wrapped in a blanket and beside a room heater (low temperature) to try and bring her temperature up.

Do you have metacam on hand? She needs pain meds now. Make sure you keep her hydrated and warm.

I don't have any metacam. I have antibiotic (minocycline) medication and a have a corticosteroid cream. We've give her water and like I said she beside a room heater. Would either of these help?

I'll try and give a picture ASAP. I've lost my memory card so I just need to find it.

OMG!!!! :sad3:

How is she this morning????????????????????????? The poor, little, thing!!!!! What a dreadful thing to have happened!!! :tearful:

She degloved her tail...basically peeled the skin off the muscle and bone...its horribly painful and I am sure your ratty is in shock. She needs a vet this morning. The convulsion was probably more due to pain :(

Unfortunately Rou did not make it much passed an hour last evening. I never cried so hard as she was my favourite of the three.

We got infant ibuprofen, but we didn't even have a chance to give it to her. I went to the store as my boyfriend watched her. We gave her water through an eye dropper, and had her warm beside the space heater. She started to die and you could tell, so we just held her. The pain must have been too much for her.

We're in shock as we don't know what to do to improve our care. She was handled daily and the other two seem fine. I'm not sure if her strange waddling and sleeping last night correlated at all. Like I said, we weren't home for 5 hours and she lost it at some point during that time. I can't imagine something scared her or stressed her out without us there. Poor baby.

I'm so sorry this happened.
Is the tail in the cage or completely gone? Do you have other pets in the house that could have gotten the tail through the bars?

She lives with two younger rats, but they all got along wonderfully. We have no other animals. The tail was in the cage. We've since cleaned it entirely for the other two.

I am so sorry.

I hope you find out what happened for the sake of your remaining rats.
If it wasn't the cage, then someone seriously injured her.
Are there any wild animals in your home?

Nope, we have no problem with rats and mice. Our best idea is that she was playing with the toilet paper roles, and tried to fit in one (she uses them to build nests, all three do). Because she was very shy, we figured she freaked out assuming someone grabbed her.

There really is nothing for her to get caught in, or hurt by. The other two rats are fine. She was acting weird since the prior evening.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's horrible to lose a little one so suddenly.

One thing I remember reading when preparing to bring my girls into my home was that NEVER ever ever pick up a rat by its tail. Before you got her she may have been constantly picked up by her tail or not. You never know. Just thought I'd mention it in case because when I got jinx, the pet store ppl grabbed her by her tail to sex her and I was horrified. The next time I went I told them to just let me into the tank and I caught each rat by their middle then supported their back legs to sex them.
