Anyone ever had this prescription for their ratties - the concentration being 30ml doxycycline 5mg/ML Suspension with 6 ml of Baytril?
Directions: 0.5 ml every 12 hours for 30 days. Got this prescription about 1 1/2 weeks ago for Mike, my male rattie who has respiratory issue. the vet told me he would prescribe doxy along with predisone. Stupid me did not read the fine print until today and only then noticed the addition of baytril. :wallbang: I know this can only be a good thing - I was planning to call and ask for Baytril tomorrow anyway. But, how does this combo compare to the two separate prescriptions that most people seem to use together?

I am really new to all this medication stuff - this is my first and only one (out of 5) to need medications. I need all the help I can get! :? Any explanation would be grateful.

Baytril and doxy shouldn't be pre-mixed... unless something has changed! Honestly, doxy on its own isn't enough to knock out any infections, it should always be used in combination with something else. But mixed in the same bottle as baytril? I'm pretty sure that's not right.

Is there any chance it is doxy mixed with the suspension fluid that they usually use with baytril? Since you only put mls... it should be mg/ml to show amount of medication...

I thought the same thing Moon. I go to the same vet, but have never gotton doxy like that. If I were you Evelyn, I'd call the clinic and ask them.

I'v gotton Doxy mixed up at the local compounding store before but not with baytril mixed in it. Getting it mixed there is fine because they tell you it only lasts so long, it's not like they mixed it last week or something.

I have no idea if it could be just the suspension fluid or not - but it does say suspension WITH 6 ml of Baytril. I have a call in at the vets now - just waiting to hear back. Hopefully, I can understand their explanation :giggle: It's all Greek to me! I'll let you know what they say.

Okay, just spoke to my vets assistant who said it is definitely Baytril mixed with the Doxy. Dr. D. said that he has prescribed both doxy and Baytril together as well as separately. He is going to check his books to see if there is anything to my concerns about the mixture. He won't be able to get back to me until late this afternoon or tomorrow.

Hopefully he finds that it should not be mixed! ..I have never ever gotten that mixture before ..if he dose indeed say its fine ...I would tell him your more comfortable with having baytril and doxy in different mixtures.

Renee - do you know what problems the mixture could cause - or is it just that it won't be effective. Also, have you read anything anywhere about not mixing them?

Oh, and I never said it in the other thread, but I was told one of my vets to NOT give the meds right after each other, let alone mix them together.

Thanks Moon. I did know about not giving meds right after one another - so it would just make sense that you shouldn't mix them together either. Ill check out the thread now. Thanks again.

That link Moon posted is very good, take a look at that and yes ..your not supposed to give the meds directly after one another, best to wait 30 minutes in between, so I can imagine that mixing them is a no no.

I just e-mailed Debbie Ducommon - The RatLady -author of the Rat Health Care Book. She didn't seem to think there was problem combining the two meds, but recommended that amoxicillin be tried first. :? Now I'm really confused - still waiting to hear from the vet.

I find Clavamox + Baytril works a lot better!

I also find meds work better when not mixed together ..espicially for mikes case since he has been sick for quite sometime.

I used to find it hard getting meds! but they know I won't settle for just anything haha

I am going to move this to Health and General Care because I think it might be seen by others more quickly.

I know a lot of people here are big Debbie D fans, but I think in some things her advice is pretty outdated, and this might be one of those things. Just an opinion!!
