I know many of you are pretty good at figuring out dosage for meds, which I haven't done much before, so please, let me know how this works.

One of the new boys Dexter seems to have a bit of a URI going. He came to me after moving around a bit from different foster homes and adoption fairs and I was told that the foster he was with post neuter had noticed a bit of sneezing. I can't remember if they were giving him meds or not, I'm waiting for an email back, but it was also possibly from moving around from the different homes. I had noticed a bit of sneezing from him, but not a ton, plus they were still adjusting to here and I was switching them back and forth with the girls during intros. However, he had a bit of rusting around his shoulders, and the final proof came during last nights [s:cxhiolj8]drowning[/s:cxhiolj8] bath for his abscess. He had a sneezy moment and he was sneezing some bright red porphyrin. He quickly groomed it all away, but I caught him in the act so I think it's time for meds.

Berry also had a URI when she came to me which cleared up with meds, two weeks of doxy and two weeks of baytril/doxy. She is my other sneezer and I saw a bit of porphyrin on her too, so I'm going to start her on it again.

Last time I was at the vet, she prescribed me some extra to have on hand. I have Baytril 68mg and Doxycycline 100 mg compounded in 10 ml cherry syrup. As of this morning, Berry weighs 269g and Dexter weighs 490g. So how do I go about figuring out dosages for each?

You need to find out if the meds are still good to use.
If the meds have been mixed up/compounded they are only good for 10 to 14 days, depending on the med.
Then the meds start to lose their effectiveness.
From what you have written, it sounds like you need to get more doxy and possibly baytril from the vet.

Also, if a med is working for a resp problem, they need to stay on it for at least 4 to 6 weeks (at least 6 weeks in my experience) or they will not be completely over it and the symptoms will return.

68 mg/ml for the baytril?

The dose for doxy is 2.5 to 5 mg/454.4 g twice a day. (from the Rat Health Care book)
(the online RMCA dose is 2.5 mg/454.4 g)

Berry:
doxy at 2.5 mg/454.4g, would be 1.48 mg = 0.15 ml twice a day
doxy at 5 mg/454.4g, would be 2.96 mg = 0.3 ml twice a day

Dexter:
doxy at 2.5 mg/454.4g, would be 2.7 mg = 0.27 ml twice a day
doxy at 5 mg/454.4g, would be 5.39 mg = 0.54 ml twice a day

Sorry SQ i must have misunderstood your question about the baytril. Since they are mixed, calculating the right dosage for the doxy should mean it's the right dosage for the baytril, right? I'm going to start them both at the higher end and then once symptoms disappear for a few days, could I step them down to a lower dose for a few weeks to make sure it is ou of their systems?

Oh, no I misunderstood.
I have never heard of baytril and doxy being premixed together.

Batril dosages vary,
The Rat Health Care book gives 10 mg/454.4g, while the online RCMA dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg/454.4 g

Berry: baytril 6.8mg/ml
at 10 mg/454.4 g, Berry would need about 5.9 mg of baytril = 0.87 ml twice a day
at 5 mg/454.4 g, Berry would need about 3 mg of baytril = 0.45 ml twice a day
at the extremely low dose of 2.5 mg/454.4 g, Berry would need about 1.5 mg of baytril = 0.22 ml twice a day
.... at 0.3 ml (see doxy dose), Berry would be getting 2.07 mg of baytril, twice a day

Dexter: baytril 6.8 mg/ml
at 10 mg/ml Dexter would need 10.8 mg, at 5 mg/ml Dexter would need 5.4 mg twice a day
at the extremely low dose of 2.5 mg/ml Dexter would need 2.7 mg twice a day
...... at 0.54 ml (see doxy dose), Dexter would be getting about 3.7 mg of batril twice a day

==================================================

All that to say that to say that

I would suggest that you give:
Berry 0.3 ml twice a day
Dexter 0.54 ml twice a day

This would give them each a high end dose of doxy but a fairly low end to medium dose of baytril.
Imo it would not be a good idea to decrease this dose
If the meds work, I would suggest keeping them on that dose for at least 6 weeks.
If you get more meds, and get the doxy and baytril seperate, I would suggest the baytril dose be increased.
(my suggestions are based on my experience, I am not a vet etc)

If you do decide to decrease the amounts, you wouldn't want to go any lower then the lowest dose for the baytril of 2.5 mg/454.4g
.... which is 0.22 ml twice a day for Berry, and 0.4 ml twice a day for Dexter

Hope this helps
