Today I had a random thought. My huge male that I just adopted took a large squishy poo and just continued to sit on it. I just thought he was being a gross boy but it got me thinking. I fostered my sister's one eyed, massively obese, 16 yr old diabetic cat, during his last days. Basically from once that cat got diabetes at 11 years old he had the most atrocious poop. His litter box was constantly a disaster zone. He was also a super chunk and kind not right in the head. Now that I'm thinking about it, Triscuit my rat shared many of the same traits as Cinder the cat. Now of course Cinder drank a lot of water and was puking which led us to testing for diabetes in the first place. I only have had Triscuit for about 3 weeks and he is with 3 other rats so it's really hard to tell if he is drinking a lot of water. And I know rats can't vomit so that would get rid of that symptom. Triscuit is overweight and a little bit older. I have stopped all his extra bird treats he was getting at his old home and he gets taken out and exercised daily now that I have him. I'm just concerned that he may have diabetes and I'm not catching it because the most obvious signs are harder to catch in his situation.
So yeah, let me know what you think. Also, I am inclined to get little ideas in my head about my pets that are totally unreasonable. I kind of tend to need something to worry about. So feel free to be honest if you think there is no way my boy has diabetes. Thanks!

Diabetes is very uncommon in rats, so you can discount that. There is a saying in rat rescue...what goes in must come out...whatever your boy was eating before has to cycle through his digestive system before things and poops will settle down.

What are you feeding him now? What is his staple diet, and what treats and other stuff are you giving him?

If I had a nickel for every time a rat pooped out a yucky one then proceeded to step on it and stay there... I'd be a rich girl. lol
I'm betting it's the change in diet for him. Ease off on veggies and no fruits until his poop get back to normal.
