I was cleaning out the cage and my girl Cookie was wandering around, and the next thing I know, she's laying flat on her belly- something she rarely does unless she's hot, or really really tired.

So I was watching her and she was pooping!
a couple of seconds after finishing she got up and walked off and seemed ok.

Could this mean she has/had a belly ache, or maybe that it hurt to poop?

all of the girls had sticky wet poo today, I guess they had too many Brussels sprouts? (they had those last night though, nothing this morning except the lab blocks)

unless they had stashed something that went bad? I"m pretty good at finding any bits of fresh food they may have tried to store for later.

is there any other reason for a rat to lay down to poop? all I can think of is she may have had gas or something

poor Cookie!!
she is a little bloated looking but then she's gained some weight since I got the babies because they eat higher protein food...so the bloated look isn't new today, she's looked chubbier for a couple of weeks.

I hope she doesn't have any thing bad going on inside.

well she looks ok but all of my girls are sleeping tonight, this is unusual, they are usually awake most of the night....
I did vacuum their room and move their cage earlier and they did have a long out time, but still.......

the other little oh-oh is that I am having digestive issues myself- and we all ate the same vegetables-

my freezer stopped working er, last weekend was it? or the weekend before? I forget...anyway I didn't throw everything out, I cooked up the meat and most of the veggies seems to still be cold enough so I kept them.
I've used several packages already and they seemed fine.

I don't have any pain, though, and I think I read that if you have "food poisoning" you have a bad stomach ache?
and that it effects you pretty quickly after eating the problem food?

but this is more delayed. I don't even know what you get from improperly frozen food. There are a lot of recipes that call for you to thaw out frozen veggies and then add them to the recipe and then cook everything together (one that I really like is a chicken and cream cheese with spinach recipe that is baked inside a loaf of bread dough, it's awesome) but I digress

off to google food poisoning..........

Yeah a little stomach upset could be everything. Also watch those gassy veggies, like brussel sprouts, broccoli etc...use smaller amounts of them compared to other veggies.

She wasn't straining or anything to poop was she?

no, not that I could tell, in fact, she almost seemed to be smiling, like laying down to poop was the best idea she'd ever come up with :giggle:

she didn't seem the least bit distressed, it was just odd to see her laying flat down on her belly.

she's been acting pretty normal when she's awake. They all had moister than normal poops after the Brussels sprouts and now that you mention it, there was broccoli in the mix they had before that.

I wish they'd wake up, I've been up all night wanting someone to play with- instead I got a huge pile of hammocks cut out. also fun, but not as much fun as playing with my kids.

The babies were out earlier for an hour or so, in my bonding neckie thingie, but when they went back in the cage, THEY went to bed too.

They were out a lot yesterday though, maybe that wore them out?!?! and it's rainy today, so I guess they are having a sleepy day.
*shrug*

I think I'll hold off on all veggies for now- after the freezer went out, I ordered some of those Just Veggies dehydrated veggies for them.
very expensive but at least they can't go bad.

:laugh4: Sorry, I know you are worried, but I couldn't help it...

I hope you will all be feeling better tonight. Maybe all they need is their afternoon deep sleep to get rid of whatever caused it? Paws and fingers crossed that it's just a little temporary episode and that you all will be back to your old selves tonight!!

just wanted to update, we're all ok now! Cookie is doing great and I have cut way back on the broccoli and Brussels sprouts

what are the best veggies for rats?
I usually give them peas, carrots, spinach, summer squash, tomatoes and red peppers

those plus broccoli and b sprouts, are the ones I usually have on hand.

I can't give them fruit much at all because it gives them mushy poos :giggle:

kale, cauliflower, I give mine raw corn on the cob during the season, leaf lettuce, sweet potato (cooked)

ok now I"m hungry

raw corn, really? shoot, I've given them corn on the cob a couple of times but always cooked it first (and let it cool of course)

they love sweet potato! I forgot about those. thanks for reminding me!

cauliflower goes fast here, I really should buy it more often than b sprouts and broccoli as I think it probably doesn't cause as much gas, and I like it raw (and so do my girls)

So Cauliflower and Broccoli is ok to give to them?
I just gave the teen girl's a bowl of raw veggies, carrot shavings, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, orange bell peppers and broccoli. But the broccoli was a new food for them, I hate broccoli so we don't have some around often...so I was just wondering.
