The scabs are now all over his back and his fur is getting thin from scratching.

I am going to buy the medication, I'm just checking with you guys too see if you agree it's a case of mites?

Yeah, the first thing you do is get the Revolution on him and pray!!! That's a mess, and if it is mites, he's HEAVILY infested. If it doesn't work, then you may have pyoderma on your hand, looks like surface from the pics.

Mite infestation......bad one. Poor guy looks like he has chicken pox. The scratching should slow down in a day or so after revo.
Good luck, this one could take awhile.

Where do I get revo? and should i completely scrub down the entire cage?

You will need to treat both rats with revolution asap, and then clean the environment ....
Hope it is mites and not pyoderma.
Poor little guy, that looks so very painful.

Edit:
Yes, scrub down the entire cage, and rinse well.
Wash any cloths, freeze anything wooden for at least 3 days, vacumn (and throw out the bag) etc to try to get mites that may be in the home.

You get cat or kitten revolution from the vet.
The amount given is based on body weight ... usually a drop is placed on the back of their neck.
It will kill parasites for a month.
A second treatment may be needed a month after the first treatment is given.

DO you know the cost of the treatment?

I payed $15 for one kitten treatment here, but some vets here require that you buy the whole box of treatment for about $60. Thankfully my vet still sells individual tubes. *Someone correct me if Im wrong!*

Sid has skin that looks like that some times. He had mite treatment for a long time and it never worked. I have to shampoo him in medicated shampoo from the vet when he gets bad.

I hope your guy just has mites, because anything else can be a pain to get rid of

I noticed that Sid is also dark coated, and my other rat that has a white coat is showing absoluetly no signs. Maybe this is something that only appears in dark coated rats?

hmm i don't know about that
Is this the first time you have noticed skin problems with him?
I found my 2008 diary and i was looking through it and it had vet appointments in from march 08 with Sid and his skin. He has had problems since he was around 6 months old with dry skin and hair loss and then scabs.
But, i treated both my guys for mites originally because my other rat had them (i only had two back then) and he cleared fine, but Sid didnt. Mite treatment is worth a shot
