I'm a little bit annoyed right now. I bought what I thought was Baytril from a site that looked respectable. It wasn't in a sealed jar but I figured they had broken it up from a larger amount since I only bought 25 tablets. I threw it in my first aid kit. I was going through my kit today and pulled it out to look at it, then I noticed the tablets didn't look right. I looked up the code on them and came up with Ciprofloxacin. I emailed the company and let them know and asked for either an exchange for Enrofloxacin or a refund. It's been a month since I purchased it so they may not provide me with either :gaah:

From what I can find on this it is a second generation antibiotic while Enrofloxacin is a third generation? They are both in the same family of drugs and are both used to treat the same things. I could only find one page that talked specifically about it in treating rat illnesses. Does anyone have any experience with treating rats with it over enrofloxacin? Should I put up a big fuss over it or just keep it around?

From what I've heard Cipro is a good antibiotic much prescribed for many ratty problems. One of my kids had it after a spay & tumor removal... But different antibiotics are targeting different troubles of course. You need to look it up on the net and find what it's prescribed for and of course you need to do that to find correct dosage for your kids if it suits their problems..

Ratguide had a page on it, it did mention absorption isn't as good but nothing else seemed different. I guess I just see Baytril everywhere, in every piece of literature, in every forum post about UTI's and Myco, and very little if any mention of Cipro. Debbies rat guide doesn't even mention it at all. I did not buy this to avoid vets but I like to have the basics on hand, after 11 years of rats I have learned that a good emergency kit is your best friend. I am super careful with dosing and always read up on any and all drug information I can find for a certain drug. Which is why I was concerned when I found out that the drug I thought I was getting was not the one I got, and although they are very similar I wanted opinions on if they actually were similar enough to use on my little babies if needed. It's good to hear that vets prescribe it on a regular basis.

It's a shame that they are marketing it as Baytril but the cipro could still be used if your vet thinks your rats need antibiotics.

They sent me a reply this morning, they seem to be crossing Cipro with Enro in the email.

We purchase the enrofloxacin direct from the manufacturer Bayer. The baytril you mention is not available for poultry use. If it was available in the 250 mg strenght you would be paying $5.99 per tablet at 25 tabs would be $149.75 per bottle.
What we sale works fantastic for lower and upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, pneumonia and mycoplasma gallisepticum.

Lilspaz, have you dealt with this company before? Or was it just something similar happened with another online store?

Yeah they are saying its baytril but it IS cipro (Bayer also makes cipro), there is no 250 mg strength pill of baytril. It's one of the reasons you have to be careful buying meds online...at least you got sent a decent antibiotic. :cheeky:

Yep, that is it. I never realized there wasn't a 250mg strength. Stupid mistake on my part, I should have looked up the dosages available. I've done that now after I googled the pill to find out what it actually was. I'm glad I didn't buy anything else off of them and will never use them in the future. The whole reason I went with them over the injectable was per mg the pills would provide more doses and I read somewhere that the injectable is only good for 10 days once you beak the seal? Anyone have info on that? I know a lot of people buy the injectable to give orally because they have a lot of rats and experience and I can't imagine they would if it expires so easily.
