Charlie has took a strange turn for worse
He suddenly became lethargic and has trouble
eating, raising his head and co ordination in general
he seems puzzled by his environment and responds very slowly
had him to the vets who gave him a steroid injection and said
that physically he was fine but looks like a nerological problem
I would say he looks like he has suffered a stroke, he is not having
any spasms but seems like dementia. He is only about 17 month old
the only thing that has been done recently is we have treated
them for fur mites but vet says it doesnt look like a toxic reaction.

Has anyone any advice or experiance of this type of problem?

If it were a reacting to the medication, it would have been the same day. Was it the same day as the bug treatment? What type of treatment did you use?
It definitely sounds neurological. Can you keep up the steroid treatment? If it's a stroke the rat might come around and recover but if it's pituitary tumour, then the steroid can help him and slow the progression of the tumour and give him more quality time with you.

We treated all the cagemates with Spot on for the fur mites...and Charley had no reaction that is why vet considered it was not toxilogical
he has problems holding food but seems to want it we are keepein up feeding with baby food and a crushed corn mix which he laps at
im also making sure that he gets a fluid intake via syringe His main syptoms seem to be a loss of coordination even though he gets around quite well walking
he dosent seem to be aware of his surroundings... He had his steroid yesterday and vet said to look for sign of improvement within 2 days
but most of what i have read seems to point to a PT... We will keep him on Baytril and TLC but it doesnt seem promising :((

I would definitely say it's neurological of some sort. If there is improvement get some steroid to give at home on a regular basis, like Jo said it can help with a stroke or slow the progress of a tumor.

Bearphar Spot-On is Ivermectin. How did you dose him? The last I had heard about this particular treatment from my UK friends is that the directions say to give the whole dose just the one time. Has this changed?

An Invermectin overdose can cause neurological effects and those can take a bit to appear (12 hours) - at least that was my experience with my mouse. That being said, it does sound like a PT. Hopefully the steroids help and you have some more time with him. :hugs:

the steroid injection seems to have had no effect...in fact he seems to be getting worse
no interest in food now :(
think that the choice will be to PTS sooner than later
as we dont want him to suffer

Oh ... Lil the spot on treatment is 10 drops on back of neck one time only
I dont think that this was the problem as all 4 cagemates were treated at same time and
none of the others seem to be effected and the vet said usually if it was a toxicity problem its notaceable within
24hrs...Charley showed his syptoms about 5 days later

Yeah, 5 days later wouldn't be a reaction to meds. It does sound very much like PT which can strike so fast and not always respond to meds.

Hopefully he has a turn around :(

Charlie did not make a recovery and it was decided to PTS
as he wasn't eating or responding in any way
His pics are posted in Memorials...thank you all for the
best wishes and advice given
at least he is well now playing over the bridge
