I'm planning on neutering both of my male rats very soon, and I am hoping this will result in a successful intro and eventually roommates.

Now, some people have told me that it's very rare that two neutered males will not get along, and other people have told me that even after they are neutered, they most likely will never get along.

what the hell is the actual truth here?

I really need to know so that i don't get my hopes up :\

my ultimate goal is to have them be friends so i can put them in the same cage. they hate each other right now because they're hormonal and what not, so i don't know what to think.

advice?

Its hard to give a blanket answer since each rat has a different personality, even with the source of testosterone removed.

Except for one, all of my neutered males have gotten along with each other and lived in the same cage. As for the odd boy out, he came with a long history of severely beating up other males even after he was neutered. Given his history, I've never tried introing him with my other boys. He's paired with a very anti-social female instead.

BUT if you get your males neutered and they still don't get along, you have the option of introing females with them (that intro scenario typically worked really well). Uh, you'd still have the problem of two separate cages, but at least your boys will have girlfriends.

I have 21 males living together. The only reason why is because I neutered my problem boys.
very rarely does a nueter not work. You can watch these videos and see the change.

Meet John one of 4 of the brothers I had neutered because they gashed, ripped apart and fought every male. He is part of my group of 21 males now.

Trust me it is terrifying to neuter your boys but trust me it is the best thing for a peaceful house. Some boys will not know the true meaning of happy till they are neutered.

Usually when you hear of neutered males not getting along with other neutered males, it's because they have a really awful background - like they came from a horrible hoarding situation or something similar. I've personally found neutering works wonders on males, even if they're not aggressive - it lets them relax and they're happier as a result. I think it's incredibly unlikely that your males will not get along after a neuter and proper introductions.

Great point! My odd-boy did come from a bad hoarding situation. The lady had 200+ rats, but not enough cages and space - she stuffed like 15 rats into a small hamster cage.

I think it is likely that people who say neutered boys don't get along just put two rats together.
When any rats are not under 3 months of age they need to be introed, regardless of the sex.
Fortunately there are established, gradual intro steps that work extremely well.

People who say neutered males wont ever get along are the people who don't know neutered males.
After a neuter, you still need to take proper intros steps and once that's done and they have a big comfy cage, they should be just fine.

This is AWESOME!! He looks sooo happy after!!
I always had the idea that after a neuter, they're mellow and not hyper but seeing your excited little guy has made me feel sooo much better about neutering them :)
