Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this site and need some help as the internet isn't very useful.

My Rat Casper will be 2years old in July. His teeth, both bottom and top are perfect. Except, behind his top teeth he seems to be having the
teeth grow from the back?, it's white teeth thats growing of his front ones and he kinda looks like he's go block top teeth due to this.

Sorry if it's a bit hard to understand, i duno any other way of explaining it. I'll try to upload a picture, if he ever stays still! LOL!.

Any ideas why his teeth have gone like this?. He always have carrot, something to gnaw on, gnaws his own teeth, but then suddenly, this happens!..

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!. Thanks!! :)

Could he have split his tooth and its growing back as like 2 teeth?

Is this extra interfering with his bite at all? His other 4 incisors are properly aligned and not growing crookedly?

I just looked and his top teeth have been split or something. You know, his top teeth at the bottom of them are mean't to be straight, where as his
are now vertical in a line e.g. one is shorter then the other but alined with eachother. Hard to explain! :/
But, hope you get me?

So do you think thats why he has white part growing at the back of these teeth?, their attached to the teeth and making him look
like he has block teeth!

From the picture, it looks like he has very thick upper teeth. I've had a few rats like that. I never thought much of it. Is he eating ok?

He's drinking and eating. Drinks at a funny angle because of his teeth, but still is drinking and eating, well he can never turn down peanut butter or something
tasty, like cheese. So in all i would say yes, just in a different way to normal?

the yellow/orange is the healthy colour of the outside of a tooth, the white is just the back of the tooth. As Jo says it looks like thick teeth but as long as it doesn't grow crookedly and require trims (malocclusion) I wouldn't worry. Btw rats keep their teeth filed down by bruxxing, not by chewing on hard objects. Also how his teeth are aligned won't change his drinking unless they are so messed up that he cannot open his mouth and get his tongue out. A lot of rats will tip their heads to drink, its just a mannerism. With feeding peanut butter, be careful and make sure not to feed it often (fatty, oily and tons of sugar) plus it can make your rat choke unless its thinned down.

I know rats tip their head to drink, but i mean't it as in casper does it in such a way now that you can see his whole top teeth, where as you couldn't see this before.
He had normal teeth at th top, yellow/orange thin teeth, but recently has started growing white teeth parts at the back of his top ones.
As long as he's eating and drinking i'm not to worried, it's just that he had normal teeth, now they've gone to blocks all of a sudden?, well on his top ones.

Suppose i'll just have to keep an eye on him. Duno if there's anything the vet can do really

This is Isabella's teeth notice the white part behind her teeth...it's been getting thicker and thicker, and she does get her teeth trimmed for malocclusion, but it doesn't sound like your boy needs any vet help at this point. Keep an eye on the growth of those teeth, check every few days because they can grow really fast.

Your rat has the "thickening" white part as casper does on both his top teeth!
How do you think they get that?, i've had 3 rats before and not had that problem at all!

I believe some have that with age. Funnily enough, I had a Casper as well and he had the same thing as your Casper. But with my guy, he ended up becoming overgrown. My Casper was old and sick. I believe that being sick stops the rats from properly bruxxing and keeping their teeth healthy, same with if they are given too much soft foods or even too much sugar will cause the teeth to become abnormal.

lilspaz: Your pictures are great! Thanks for taking them and posting... so nice to see Exactly what you're talking about!

I should take more pics...

Well, he is starting to become an old boy lol, bless him.
Looks like it will be just dried food for a while, keep an eye on him and see how he is!

Cheers guys! :D :hugs:

low fat, sugar and protein diet (what are you feeding him as his staple diet?), veggies, a little fruit, very occasional protein is what he should have.
