Can you give them too much "out-time"?

My two kids are home sick...must be almost Chrismtas (we haven't had a completely healthy holiday season in years, lol!)
The point is, the rats have been getting loads of out time as the kids want cuddle buddies while they watch TV, etc. waiting for their health to return. We provide the boys with a supply of fresh water, food, and shelter wherever they may be, and I wanted to know if there may be a "don't keep them out longer than 'x' amount of time" guideline that I've missed.
Thanks!

My rats have the run of the bedrooms. They come and go from the cage as they want. Not everyone can do that. More out time means more chew time so you really have to rat proof if they are out. Your rats are probably loving the time.

I can't see how there could be too much out-time unless they need a break from being handled by the kids. If the ratties are content, go for it!

I agree, there can't be too much out time but I do believe it's important for the rats to know they can get back home if they want to.

More often than not, our boys have access to the couch and love seat if my wife or I are home. They still spend most of their time sleeping in their CN...although that may have something to do with their ages: 24 to 30 months.

I don't think there's too much time but a lot of my rats will fall asleep after a while rather than play. Which is fine and a change of enviroment.
