So I had to take my rats with me on a long trip. I had a cage for them, but one of my rats didn't like being pent up for a long time. I did get to take them out to run around, but not while in the car.
So on the way home from where we were, my oldest boy Peanut would attempt to get out of the cage every chance he got, but if I tried to hold him, he'd flip out while the car was in motion. I couldn't hold him cuz he didn't feel secure. So then at one point, I decided to put in in the carrier, to see if that would help and noticed something really odd and freaky about his face. His mouth was open (which isn't normal) and a little crooked. The eye on that same side was shut a little as though he was in pain and he was breathing really heavily. This was also about 9pm and we were in a small town where no vet was available that time of night.
His bottom teeth looked out of whack, like open or tilted in an unnatural way, like one was bent out a bit. I was freaking out! He was getting all panicky too and breathing very heavy.
All I could do was hold him inside the carrier and give him comfort while we drove home as fast as was allowed. While he was in there, I sorta touched his jaw and mouth, feeling his funky teeth, which he didn't seem to like too much anyways. But after 3 hours, when we got home, I looked at him and his mouth was no longer wonky, it was closed and his teeth were back to normal.

I have no photos, but my husband saw his mouth too and my mom saw it was open (even though she didn't see the state of his teeth).

Can rats dislocate a part of their jaw somehow? Or bend their teeth? I don't know /how/ he could've done so, as he was fine that morning and I have no idea when it happened either. All I know is that every time I took him out or he climbed out of the cage, he went nuts while I tried to hold him.

He's fine now, but apparently his jaw is still tender, as he's not eating much. His teeth are fine in length otherwise too.
I've tried to give him some soft food at least, but he does brux a little bit, just not like he has in the past. Have any of you seen this sorta thing before?

Yeah, it FREAKED me out. I looked at his face and it was just open and kinda, not centered and I was just like "what in the world?" I have no idea when or how he did it, but it looked horrible! He was all panicky cuz I think he was in pain, but he didn't squeak or anything. I don't know if he pushed it back in, or when I grabbed his teeth and wiggled it a bit that I reset it, but it's back to normal, but he won't yawn wide atm.

Yes, I'm going to the store today, (now that I'm home) and I think I'll pick up a couple things of baby food.

So glad he's okay. D8

Yeah. I think I know what may have happened. The cage I bought has a front and top open hinge doors. He'd been mooshing his nose up between the bars like anxious to get out and it's possible he could have had his mouth gnawing on the bars near the door when I opened it and I didn't see, and his teeth maybe caught and the door unhooked his jaw. He didn't make any noise, or squeal or anything. All I knew was he was totally panicking and freaking out and when I stuck him in the carrier, his jaw was hanging open and he was breathing heavy. I wasn't sure if his jaw was dislocated, never seen it before, and it was like that for awhile, but perhaps when he finally calmed down he or me was able to put it back in. I'm thinking it went in when I grabbed his teeth and jaw and kinda shook it a bit, sounds plausible anyways.

I'm trying to get him to eat some baby food, he's picky, but he's eaten a bit. I might also try to get him to drink some more Ensure too, that might help. He's bruxing, like I said, so that's a good sign.

I guess moral of the story, make sure your ratties mouths are no where near the hinge of any cage door when opening. oO;

Wow, that sounds bizzare!
The jaw is held by two joints, and any joint can be dislocated. Ow...
I agree - soft diet for a while until he demonstrates that he is willing to eat hard food on his own. You can make up mush from soaking his lab blocks so he still gets the same diet.

Looking at some rat skulls online to see anatomy, it appears that the lower jaw has two separate sides, so the front part isn't held together by any bone to create any sort of 'chin', so it's very likely he dislocated the one side somehow. I do remember one tooth being crooked and not close to the other like normal, which is one reason why it totally freaked me out. It looked awful!

I've given him some baby food, a little ensure, some yogurt and mashed up blocks, he's eaten a little of everything, but not that much. He's been sleeping a lot. I'll keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't need anything else. I will probably separate him tonight into a different cage with the mashed up food so I can make sure he's the one eating it.

Thanks everyone!

Peanut is doing a lot better! He's eating solid hard foods again! Woot! I got him to eat a few soft foods the day after it all, but he seemed more keen on sleeping and not eating a whole lot that day really at all. But, I got /some/ nutrition in him. But he's better and eating normal again. Yay!
