A few minutes ago I had found my 6 month old boy mutt with a bloody nose! He as only been back in the cage for about 10-15 minutes and he was perfectly fine before! His breathing sounds kind of muffled and he is sneezing a lot. His breathing and sneezing may just be from the blood in his nose but I am not sure! I also have no idea why his nose is bleeding I dunno of his brother scratched him or what! Their also seems to be something in one of his nostrils. Does anyone know what could have caused this or what to do? I plan to call the vet but he is close at the moment.

I had this happen once and when I took him to the vet, the vet couldn't find anything wrong... (Not that you shouldnt look into it!)

Is it dry where you live? A rat may have accidentally caught their nail up his nose and scratched him, LOL, gross as that is. Or if its dry the inside of his nose may be dry and cracked, making it bleed.

Keep him hydrated, keep an eye on him, and patiently wait it out... if he'll let you, you could also pinch the bridge of his nose, that helped a little bit with Ed.

My first thought was porphyin as well. They get a reddish like snot when they are stressed for any reason which could be due to simple things like different smells or smoke or worse things like an illness.

No I live in florida its not really that dry here. he seems to be fine now though and as stopped bleeding. he may have just gotten a nail stuck in their like you said. I am still going to call the vet and see what he as to say about it and i will be keeping a eye on him. Thank you so much for your help!

When I First saw him in his cage I thought it was porphyin but then when I got a closer look it I saw that it was blood.

When you say it was bloody... Do you mean it was actually dripping blood consistently, like humans would get a bloody nose? Or was it just kind of coming out like a snot consistency? (LOL weird questions hahahaha)

It was dripping consistently. It was a lot like a bloody nose that humans get. Its ok it's a weird question but I know what you mean.

Maybe he got it scratched. But do keep an eye on it. Rats can get polyps in their nose and that will cause a lot of bleeding. Unfortunately... not a good prognosis with polyps in the nose.
