Last night, one of the visiting boys somehow got into my rats' cage. After some fur flying, we manage to pull him out and check everyone over - they were all fine except Pip who was bleeding profusely from his eye. We managed to stop the bleeding eventually, and thankfully xxchelle helped me with the painkiller dosage. With all the blood I can't tell exactly where the injury is, but I'm preparing for loss of the eye. While cleaning it there were a couple chunky bits, which could have been clots, and what sort of looked like a white stringy thing (which didn't come out).

When I could still see the eye it looked deflated in comparison to the other one. Now I can't tell because it's crusted over with blood. Here's a picture, linked in case someone is squeamish of blood.

I tried to get him in with the local exotic vet today, but she wasn't in. And she's fully booked until Thursday. :gaah: I am going to call another clinic Monday morning and see if they can take a look. I am assuming he will need antibiotics at the very least - if his eye is damaged, will he need surgery? What should I expect? Any stories of one-eyed rats will be comforting.

Sometimes damaged eyes will just shrink down to nothing (been through 5 now and 2 didn't need surgery). The problem is infection...that is when you must get an enucleation (eye removal).

I have been through 3 of those procedures (search for Lady's eye, Tepeu's eye under me as the poster). DO NOT even look at last weeks, because its not typical. Even my vet who is teaching another vet part time about small domestics wouldn't let her sit in on Eli's enucleation because it was not a normal one at all.

The rats need a lot of pain meds, but adapt very well to having one eye. Is the eye actually gone, or is there a flap of skin fallen over it?

Well, thankfully, his eye is just fine! At the vet's we soaked the area until the scab came off, at which point we found out it was just his eyelid. Both upper and lower eyelid are cut, and the stringy bit I saw was part of the lower one. The vet gave us some antibiotic eyedrops and sent us on our way. :D
