I adopted a beautiful black ratty on Saturday, and I've been noticing that she has a very different smell from my girls. It's sort of a.. Floral scent? I can't really describe it. I'm not sure what she was housed on at her old house.. Could it be that still?

Also, she appears to have dandruff. How can I help her with this?

She's going to the vet tomorrow to see what kind of health she's in, I just wanted to ask some ratty experts too.

If you're seeing little white dots of "dandruff" it could be buggies. Are there any scabs? Check around her chin area. It could also be due to dry skin. I've heard a little bit of olive oil helps with this :)

Oh dear. She has 2 very small scabs. They don't move, I hope that means something. (The white stuff). This is why QT is good!! Thank god she goes to the vet tomorrow.

One of my rats, Constantine.. he faintly has a cream smell.. like hand cream or something, I cant explain it, Ive never used anything on him.. his oil smell is sweet so it kinda smells like creams... but it smells nice though LOL :D :giggle:

My girl Isis always smelled kinda like vanilla and Judy swore Seraphina smelled like grape soda. It could just be her ratty smell :D Which sounds pretty hehe

I've always heard that boy rats smell like corn chips and girl rats smell like grape soda/koolaid. And our neutered boys smell like grape too. =) Hope you get the mites taken care of, and a bit of olive oil on her fur to groom off or on bread for her to eat can't hurt.

Mine just smell of pee, old food, and old milk. Lol.

Rats can get dandruff, some of mine are prone to it, but it could be lice/mite eggs ;/

My black and dark coated rats seem to get dry skin much more often. I know that in humans, darker coloured hair is prone to dryer skin.. maybe its the same for rats?... none of my light coloured boys have more then a few flakes..

2 of my female rat's smell like flowers, always have.
Also, put some olive oil or flax seed oil on some whole wheat bread every day, it keeps their skin hydrated.
Have the people who used to own them give them a bath? maybe they never washed all the shampoo off which would cause dandruf.

Apart from a few paler rats, my darker rats have had dandruff/dry skin than paler yes.

Oh, I've had some kids that have had a really obvious wonderful smell too. Lol at Rachel, hugs to your stinky kids. And Brax, do your kids really fart? I've read a lot of threads where people try to describe it , MomRat says what I've heard mostly. I've had some sniff-worthy kids too, most recently January, I'd say a floral smell with her, and it was quite strong, but come to think of it I haven't smelled it lately (bad mom I didn't notice). She's 28 1/2 mo's, so maybe it's got something to do with active hormones? makes me wonder if high scented females might also be big ear flutters?

When they were babies and used to poop on me, I'd know when it was coming because there was an awful stench first. Never a sound. However they still smell like that occasionally so I assume it's because they were just using the litter and they release gas with it every time.

My girls are a year or more and they smell like flowers and when my boys were as old as 6 months, they smelt like oatmeal cookies.

Well, she went to the vet today. Dr. Hurst couldn't tell if she had mites, she said it could also be due to husbandry (bad diet, bedding, etc) but she gave me ivermectin anyways (for free!!).

So there we go!
