I keep hearing everyone talking about baytril for their rats but what exactally is it? I looked it up and all I found were these giant taste tabs for dogs and cats. Is there a liquid kind for rats because i'd love to get some to have on hand. Our boys were just treated for poryphin and a few days after they were treated we felt it was safe for the girls to move in to the room next to them but now coccoa has started the sneezes. We had left over antibiotics and I gave her one .1 cc dose of it but I don't wanna keep giving it to her if she doesn't have what the boys had. My mom said it was because of the fan that I use at night. We have an overhead fan but my room is the "too hot or too cold" room of the house so I'll have a seconed fan blowing on me and it partially blows toward the girl cage. Could that be why she's sneezing?

Baytril is an antibiotic made by Bayer. It's good to have on hand if you can easily recognize the symptoms of a myco flare up. But before this is possible, you probably need to develop a good relationship with a vet. Most vets don't allow their clients to keep meds on hand like that unless they know the client is very knowledgeable with rats.
The fan could have caused the sneezes. Be careful when starting Baytril, you can't just give it for a couple of days, when you start a course of treatment, it has to be from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. Any shorter and you could make them become resistant to the drug.

I had a question about baytril, as well, I hope you don't mind me posting it here. I'm getting some more baytril, as well as doxy, from a vet out here. Both are liquid. How long does this stuff keep, and how do I go about storing it?

For the baytril, if it's the flavoured kind, there should be an expiry date on the bottle. If not, it's usually about 3 weeks to a month. I store my oral baytril in a dark dry place.
If it's the injectible baytril then it should be good for a very long time, like a year. Again stored in a dark dry place.
Can't help you with the doxy.

yeah we have a very good relationship with the vet already because my parents are constantly bringing our six dogs in all the time and the vet recognizes our name and gives us discounts on the visits and what not. I'll be sure to talk to the vet and see if i can get some baytril to have just in case I need it. Thank you for your help

Oh and what exactally are the signs of a myco flare up? Is it just really bad sneezes?

Myco can affect a rat in many ways but respiratory problems are the norm.

Excessive sneezing along with other secondary symptoms are usually a flare up. Secondary symptoms can be; excessive porphyrin, crackling/gurgling/wheezing breathing, lethargy, not eating/drinking well or not at all, puffed up fur, hunched stance, half-closed eyes (you sometimes se this after an injury as well), gasping is a very bad sign. any 2 of these symptoms usually mean your baby needs help.

Just remember that if your rat doesn't respond to just the baytril in 4-5 days then you will need to add another ab like doxy or zithro to their treatment, and you must do a course of abs for a minimum of 2 weeks, but 3 weeks and more is optimal. :)

expired doxycycline can cause serious kidney damage.
Storage:
Reconstituted suspension (made up by Pharmacy) can be stored at room temperature for 14 days.
If mixing capsules in water, stabilty ranges from 12 to 48 hours. It is advisable to mix fresh daily, although new 2002 literature indicates that it remains stable for 14 days if refridgerated.
Powder if stored in tightly closed container is stable for up to one year.
Reconstituted Doxycycline Hyclate/Hydrochloride, and long acting Vibravenos should be refrigerated and kept for 72 hours following reconstitution

Hahaha, i keep baytril in the fridge and doxy in the cupboard. Its best to ask your vet when you pick it up.

We have the injectable baytril given to us in a brown glass bottle and we used to keep it in the fridge but... it started getting little "floaties" in it, little white crystal-looking things. I asked the vet about the floaties and they said that I shouldn't keep it in the refridgerator because it could cause it to crystalize... So what should I be doing with it? It's living in the cupboard now where it is nice and dark...

Dark, dry and room temperature or dark, dry and refridgerated?

Like Shelagh said. :) At the clinic Baytril is stored in the basement which is very dark, but at room temperature.
