When I give out medication (Baytril, Doxy, and Metacam), I always mix it into three little spoons of mushed up banana, but usually by the time I'm mixing the second medication up, Alphonse has caught on to what I'm doing and it's like he's going, "Hah, can't fool me again this time!" (While Ed and Roy are going "We want sooome!" And doing all they can to try to get it from him. :giggle: )

So I was wondering if anyone knew if it was okay if I mixed *both* baytril and doxy into one spoonful of banana? It'd make it easier(and more tricky) to get it into him before he starts getting stubborn on me. :panic:

I know a few people that do that and seems to work quite well.
A long long long time ago, my vet told me I should wait 20 minutes between giving meds but I never do and she never gave me a reason why.

Ok... so I just asked me son who is an undergraduate in Biochemistry.

He believes it could be because most medications are often affected by enzymes in the body or by protein substrates to which they bind. If two medications are given in immediate succession it may allow for an interaction between the drugs causing unwanted effects. If however you wait 20 or more minutes, the first drug will already have begun reacting with the substrates or enzymes thereby reducing it's concentration to levels at which any possible interactions with the second drug would be negligible (i.e. no significant effect).

Ok... and he says that mixing all three together before it goes into the body could be very bad especially if they treat similar conditions.

OH, yeah, I would never take the risk of mixing Metacam into anything. It always struck me as a very strong medication that I should just... avoid those sorts of things.

But from now on I think I'm gonna start giving him *that* at different times of the day, at least. Since he only gets 2 cc of it a day. Eeep.

Odd. Never heard this from any of our vets. We've thusfar always given the meds together....time for more research.

I've been giving my girl the meds (baytril/doxy) five minutes apart since I started, it seems to be enough time for her to forget that she just did it. She can smell that baytril though, so you have to use something with a potent smell, I think bananas are smart! I might have to do that next.

She caught on to what I was doing with the soy milk pretty quickly so I changed up to mushed up cranberries (my house friggin loves those things so we always have an abundance.) But she's starting to get used to that too!

The pharmacy flavored our Doxy to strawberry. What has worked best so far is to mix the meds into banana baby food.

hmmm, now I'm curious as to what the overall opinion on this will be. I also have both bubs on baytril/doxy (mixed into strawberry syrup) & then both mixed together with banana. I have never heard anything about spacing them apart so I'll be eager for more info on what everyone thinks...
