We went to our new vet today. He was very nice and loved the Goobers. Nibbler took a chance and peed on him though. Then pooped on the counter. We were fairly certain there was going to be a dry cleaning fee on our bill but there was not. He laughed and said it wasn't the first time a rat peed on him. :giggle:

We went in the back room while he checked on their issues that we described (Freya's abscess and Nibbler's breathing), which was great that we were able to watch.

FREYA: .2 mls twice a day for two weeks - Enrofloxacin
Just an abscess as we concluded :) He squeezed under her neck and felt it "pop" and got some of the puss out ( :sick2: ) - she didn't squeak or anything.

NIBBLER: .3 mls twice a day for three weeks - Enrofloxacin
PNEUMONIA omg. How do ratties even get this? They have lots of blankets, a warm house... I don't give them baths. He said not to feel bad, sometimes it isn't noticeable right away and it seems pretty mild (he listened to her breathe for a while) but he's more concerned about the meds not working for her so we may have to bring her back for something else/multiple meds
He also said she had a gap between her bottom teeth and they were slightly crooked, but didn't seem to be slowing her down at all so we shouldn't be concerned unless we notice a change.

Both ratties seemed to accept their first dosage once they got a taste for it. Hopefully that will continue to be easy. When they were put back into the cage, Freya burrowed into the hammock, Nibbler shrunk into the corner of the cage and curled into a little ball - and Badger who came along for emotional support, kept running between the two and laying down next to them for five minutes, then running to the other and doing the same.

Freya: $30
Nibbler: $15
Enroflaxacin: $20

EDIT: Jan 23
Nibbler looks so much better already. Usually when I have her out, she crawls into her house and sleeps the entire time. (she did that ever since she was a baby so it wasn't TOO odd)
Today, her fur looks less poofy and she's been wandering around and making "beds" in the blankets for almost a hour now. She's still a bit breathy, but even boyfriend (who knows nothing about rat health etc) was like "she looks amazing!"
I'm very happy she's responding so well.
Maybe all rats do, but... still happy! :cuddle:

I wish I could have gotten video of Badger, it was super cute.

"omg they both look sad what do I do!? *cleans Freya's face* *runs over to Nibbler and lays against her* *runs back to Freya and lays against her*"

I just had Freya out with me a bit on the couch. She seemed very cautious. "what's behind this pillow? ...is there a vet behind this pillow? K, no vet. What's under this blanket? Is there a vet under this blanket?" Poor thing. :giggle:

He told us we could squeeze it oot and how to feel it and what it should feel like. (boyfriend and I will be arguing over who can do that part :giggle: )
And I also know we can use some warm water and such.

Anything else? :)

It oddly looked better this morning (before we went to the vet) than it did yesterday.

sounds like they are on track.

You wondered about how they could get respiratory problems given their good living conditions, but Mycoplasma is always present in rats. It can flare up unexpectedly. That to me is one of the saddest aspects of having pet rats; I hate seeing them succumb to Myco.

Oh, he was also telling us about how ratty puss is 'thicker' than in other animals which is why they need help cleaning it out. I found that interesting.

Good to know, Godmother. Of all the ratties I had, they never had breathing problems (almost all of them got tumors though) - but Nein and now Nibbler... it just feels like I AM doing something wrong. :?

The abscesses can be cleaned out by squirting saline in the cavity. To keep the thing open so it can drain you may need to do warm compresses as they tend to scab up easily.

I'm just insanely jealous of your vets fees!

Rats can get issues no matter what we do. For all you know if they hadn't been receiving proper care they would have had far more problems ;) It's a sad part of owning rats, but they are so worth it IMO.

Ditto! I took two in yesterday for two URI's and it cost me just under $200. I really need to move!

Glad both are doing well, hoping for fast recovery!

That is awesome! Aren't they just so adorable when they're comforting each other!?!
Again, so glad things went well.
Our girls were a little "freaked out" too. They burrowed together after the vet had them out and were also "cautious" when we got home. Not even interested in treats at first. They both laid down for a nap when back in their "home"...like it was just soooo exhausting to have a vet listen to their breathing. :giggle:

Saline? What's that? Where can I get it?

Since Badger stayed in the cage, I don't think she had any idea why everybody was being so dramatic. :giggle:

I think it was worse because when we got home I realized it was hammock-washing day so they were without their favorite bed for a few hours. :emb:

Ouch. I bet we would have paid that much at the first vet we went to. Easily. I find that smaller places are generally... better. I spent hours on google trying to find a good vet that was fair/friendly. I probably never would have found this one if it wasn't posted so recently.
