As I was giving Pearl her meds, I was thinking about how sly I have to be about it because everone has become interested in her little 'treat' twice a day, of course she's been taking it and hasn't died yet so it must be ok. I have to make sure she's alone in the area of the cage she's in and give it to her fast. She knows she has to take it fast or someone will come by and attempt to take it. When I was giving her and Lily Benedryll I couldn't get Lily to take it. I think the first time I did it I accidently squirted the stuff into her mouth and she didn't like that (stupid droppers). From then on she's always tried to bat at it (it's so funny too). But she has tried to steal the syringe from me when I have given Pearl her meds. So as I am giving Pearl her meds I came up with an idea I think I am going to try out. I want to train the rats that the syrige is not a bad thing. So being that they are extremely intellegent I am going to occasionaly put soy milk or some treat in the syringe and give it to them plain. So when the time comes to give them meds in the syringe. They will all like it because I mask the meds with something tasty and they will remember that the syringe gives treats. I know some others have been having problems with giving meds so I thought I would mention it. I also know that it may not work as well with people with many rats but hey if we can make this easier it's worth a try.

That is a good idea LA. The only thing when it comes to the real meds, the rats won't be fooled for long, but keep doing the soy milk thing so they know, sometimes it's uber nummies. :D

That is a great idea!! It's kind of funny, actually, because my Mom used to do that to me! I was a pretty sick child and I hated meds! So she would give me all of my meds in the same spoon-thing (This: http://www.dlf-data.org.uk/images/med/0035881.jpg) and sometimes would give me something tasty in there too. Basically I had to use it every night during the winter because that was when I was sick most often. Anyhow, it worked really well but Boy did I hate her when it was something not so delicious!!  My point being that it is a great idea and I never thought of trying it on our ratties!

mix their meds into the syringe with some vanilla Ensure... Ben wouldn't take his meloxicam after his neuter so I tried mixing it with Ensure... the little Einstein never figured it out... ;)

that's a really good idea! I tried mixing Raina's stuff and she wouldn't take it, however I did find out like jen pointed out that ensure works. Raina loves it and will lap it right up lol much less stress on me and her lol

What I do is this. I take the syrine and get baytril in it. Then I wipe off the outside of the syringe. Then I put soy milk on a spoon and suck the milk up. Then I turn it back and forth to mix. I haven't had trouble unless everyone is fighting for it and Pearl gets ticked.
