So Matilda is still on doxy and baytril by mouth for a little bit under a week longer. At first, she would be totally suprised when I picked her up by the scruff. She froze like instantly and I just pressed the syrine in behind her inscisors and the whole process lasted maybe 30 seconds. After that, she got a licking for the taste of it(one is pina colada, the other is tutti frutti) and licked it off the tip of the syringe while I slowly let drops out. Now, she decided she only likes the baytril, and hates the doxy. So she licks the baytril off of the tip, but turns into a total jerk when I try to give her the baytril. I pick her up by the scruff so I can see her mouth and all, gently and sitting on my lap, close to my body. She stays still, then just as I get the syringe near her mouth, she jerks her body around. She keeps doing this, so I have to keep dropping and picking her up again. Or just as I release the meds, she snaps her head away and I end up pouring it into her fur. :gaah:
It wouldn't be a problem, except that it takes like 15 minutes, and I have to give it to her twice a day with a 12 hour interval. So once before school, where I'm always in a hurry and fearful over missing my bus.
Does anyone know of a better way of doing this? I think she gets scared when I hold her by the scruff, but I don't know how else. I've tried to hold her by the body, but that gives her twice as much freedom to spin her head around. I can't mix it in her water- she needs both twice a day, and it takes her like three weeks to finish a water bottle. I can't really mix it with food, unless I feed her baby food or something else that's soft twice a day, and make sure she eats it all. Also, why did she stop licking the doxycyciline all of a sudden? She used to just lick it right off! :gaah:

I wish I could help but i'm actually in the same situation, I think food is the best choice to try right now.

I can't even use food for my boy because he knows the meds are in it and they taste like soap

Mine really like their meds mixed up with a bit of strawberry quic, a drp of olive oil, and a bit of baby cereal to thicken.
Many will eat it out od a dish, lick it off a finger, otherwise I syringe feed it

You shouldn't mix Doxy with baby cereal or anything else that is high in calcium or iron. Doxy bonds to those minerals and when fed at the same time it's effectiveness is reduced. There's an entire thread dedicated to ideas of how to mask meds but it's good to get comfortable force medicating as very sick rats won't have an appetite and it's the only way to medicate them sometimes.

I use the element of surprise :giggle: Sometime I'm able to just reach in the hammock and quickly shoot it into their mouth other times I have to let them run around the couch for a bit. Most of mine will take their meds from the syringe though because I have used Shelagh's trick of giving them Ensure through a syringe when they aren't on meds to get them used to it.
