Dr. Berge is WONDERFUL. I took Lulu in to her when she was very ill, and not only is she very rat-savvy, but she had such compassion for me and for Lulu, too. The staff was also very friendly and caring. The prices are reasonable. Don't let the small size of the office fool you. There are some very wonderful people here. If you need a vet for any animal (including rats!) in the Des Moines area, this is the place to take them.

I figured I'd chip in and mention another vet in the same area. I take my rats to Frank Dunham in Norwalk, Iowa. Tiny clinic and it takes a while to get in as he's a busy man but a wonderful, compassionate person and he is very helpful and knowledgeable. My family has been taking our pets to his clinic for many years. The cost is low also. He does not treat exotics but he of course treats rats

Edited to add: For my exotics, I go to Pet Kindness in Indianola, Iowa. I have met the vet only once (yesterday, in fact) but he seems friendly and knowledgeable and the cost is fairly low.
