My boy Lambert has a chronic respiratory infection (we're on antibiotic number 4), I was thinking about getting an air purifier to put by their cage to see if that helps any...

Has anyone done this before and if so have you noticed it helped at all?

I find it helps with odor control ....

If the air is dry, a cool mist humidifer may help with breathing.

Have you tried any combos of antibiotics? Many of us have found that often a combination is needed, that one by itself just isn't enough.

A long time ago, my sister used an air purifier but she never observed any benefit to the rats' health but that doesn't mean it may not work for Lambert. He's got a persistent respiratory infection? What have you tried in meds so far?

Bertie has been on Baytril, Baytril/Doxy, Zithromax and now Novo Trimel. It will be two weeks on Thursday that he has been on Novo Trimel, and I have noticed some improvement but not a lot, so on Thursday I am going to call my vet and try Chloramphenicol.

It's very frustrating because Bertie has never slowed down because of his respiratory, he is still happy, playful, eating and drinking normally. He even still picks on his brothers.

I picked up an air purifier today to give it a try, if it doesn't do much I'll just return it. I live in a bachelor apartment so the space is very small so I hope it might be able to help some.

NovoTrimel and chlopalm aren't that effective on URI. Have you tried zithro/baytril combo? I'd keep him on that for at leats 4 weeks. Does it sound like it's more nasal than anything else? I've got a couple of mine like this... it seems I treat it and then a week later it's back. Very frustrating for me... not for the rat, they act like nothing is wrong with them.

It definitely sounds more nasal, his respiratory rate and depth are normal. I will ask my vet about a baytril/Zithro combo when I talk to him on Thursday. It's definitely more frustrating for me than for Lambert, he's still his same old self

Thanks for all the help :D

Since I have had my purifier on (since yesterday afternoon) I haven't heard one sneeze out of Lambert!! Whether it's coincidence or not it's still very exciting :happydance:

If it's something like a dust allergy that causes his sneezies an air purifier could really help.

I live in the basement of our home and I love our air purifier. The drop ceiling creates a lot of dust and the purifier helps with that a lot.

I bought a small one that can purify a 120 square foot room, I placed it in front of my rat cage and just keep it on low speed all day long.
Since I have had it Lambert's "sneezies" have improved by 40%, which is huge because before this I thought there was nothing else I could do for him.
I highly recommend getting one!

I got this one http://www.bionairecanada.com/Product.aspx?pid=366 at Wal Mart for $50.00

lol Moon, that sounds like the one my sister used. I'm going to try the little first when my budget allows it.
40% is a huge improvement and worth it to buy it for sure!
