My old man MacGyver has been treated for an abcess right next to his penis for a good couple of months. He's been on Baytril for a long while, and since that didn't seem to work, he was switch to Trim Sulfa... which he completely refused taking. After 3 days of fighting, I looked for abcess information on here, read about Amoxicillin, grabbed my Rat Health Care guide and called my vet the next day about it. He is now having Clavulin and seems to be enjoying it.

Last week, I found the abcess was getting bigger and harder, so I went to the vet to have it cleaned up so I could start serynging a clean wound. When I saw her face, I knew this was bad news - the abcess had turned into a tumour. Mac now has a tumour sticking out of open skin on his belly.

When this was still an "abcess", I had seen my vet and Victoria's and neither was inclined to put Mac through surgery due to his age - he will turn 2,5 years old in June. He also has another tumour on his back that's been slowly growing for the past 6 months, and removing both would put him under aneasthesia for too long. Plus, the tumour is too close to the penis - removing it would be too risky. Basically, last week I was told to either put him down now, or keep nursing him until he suffers too much or cannot pee anymore. Of course, since he is still lively, I couldn't put him down.

My big concern is that the tumour on his belly seems to be bleeding every other day. I mean bleeding, light red fresh blood that will not stop for 24 hours. I started hydrotherapy twice a day plus Polysporin last weekend and I'm sure it helps, but it seems like something into him keeps filling up with blood and keeps popping up every other day. I don't know how many times I have started to grab the phone and call the vet since yesterday, but deep down, I am convinced she won't be able to do anything more... is there anything more I can do? I hate being so helpless when I see his trusting, desperate eyes during hydrotherapy... breaks my heart :sad3:

I also see that this thing hurts, despite the Metacam. If anyone has any inspiration, I admit I am at loss...

I will try to post something tonight - I am currently at work, still fighting this urge to grab the phone...

Regarding his age - he is almost 2,5 years old and I would personally have no real issue with letting him go under, but when they consider all factors (he is also growing quite a few abcess on his legs, plus some other tumours), they prefer not doing it.

As promised, here are the pictures. Putting them under spoiler, as there is a little blood to it

The wound itself. It is bloody tonight... The abcess was draining from his penis, so does the blood from the tumour

Just to give and idea of the actual size - thank God it's not too big yet...

These are blood stains from the last 3-4 hours... it was a lot worst 2 days ago[/spoiler:g8qlakbd]

I wonder if he is letting it scab over until the scab gets itchy or annoying or something and then he rips it off and starts the whole process again?

I am sorry. It is a tumour. :sad3:

Little Talli developed one just like that. She died the next morning.

That poor little guy. His age wouldn't stop me from getting him done but it's the location... rarely does it go well when it's near the urethra.
Does it ever scab over?

Shelagh - I know... :( He's still doing well, bright eyes and head and ears up, he comes to see me for food and cuddles, just like nothing is going on, so I am not too worried of losing him very short term.

Jo - I don't really see a scab, even when there is no bleeding (he was all dry and clean this morning!) so I suspect the rupture point is under the skin. Between meds and hydrotherapy, I didn't have time to take a picture this morning to show what it looks like all dried up, but it doesn't look too bad (I'm so used to seeing it by now!).

I finally caved in and made an appointment with the vet for tonight, mentioning that I might cancel if bleeding had stopped... now what do I do? Leave work very early to make the appointment (last chance with my vet until Monday, I believe) or cancel and hope for the best? Should I have the skin glued over the tumour to give healing a chance or since it has already started to poke out, should I just leave it as is? Poor Mac... :?

When I got home tonight, Mac was bleeding a bit, but by the end of the evening it had stopped and after hydrotherapy, I took another picture. It doesn't show much more than the other one, but the tumour is more visible.

I am giving him amoxicillin and metacam plus Booster, Danactive before bedtime and hydrotherapy twice daily. If anyone has another suggestion, I am opened... I postponed my vet appointment for today until Friday, so I would be in a position to bring your suggestions forward to her...
