Poor Curly died this morning, and we're a little confused by it. Granted, she had that huuuge inoperable tumor, but it honestly did not seem to be affecting her at ALL. She was fine last night, she was even fine this morning, because my bf's mum was with her this morning. She left the house, and about an hour or two later we woke up, and found her dead. Honestly, it was completely without warning, she has been very chirpy lately, actually. Could a tumor kill so suddenly? I was always told it would be a lot more gradual? I'm wondering whether she choked, I may check her throat...

So, this time last year, we were thinking what we were gonna do about Lady because she had lost her sister and was alone. And now, pretty much the EXACT time this year, we are thinking what we're gonna do about her 'cos she's lost her best bud Curly! yup, she's out lived both her 'foster' buddies! She's 3 now, and I'd really like to know your opinions on intros at this age - should I go for it?

One last thing is her legs are really very bad now, she keeps falling down the ramps in her cage - is this a very bad sign? have you ever had to let your Ratty go for this reason? is Lady in any pain do you think? we're trying to get a one tiered Rat cage for her anyhow.

Curly really did mean a lot to her; she helped keep her active in her old age, and I'm worried she's going to miss her even more than she missed her sister :( It really just goes to show how most Rats can bond with time and patience. Lady was very dismissive of her for a long time (bit her on the bum once lol), but they became the most adorable pair. I think I'm definitely one to give advice on awkward intros now

How old was curly? When they're old sometimes they just die, could be anything really.

Is she loosing back end function, or is she uncoordinated? You may need a one level cage for her, or at the very least you need to add a lot of hammocks to catch falls and make the ramps less steep if possible.

Oops, should have mentioned her age - 28 months, which is pretty young I thought. And she was just so active and chirpy; didn't act old or anything.

Definitely looking into a Rabbit hutch or something for Lady

I am very sorry.....28 months is not young for a rat unfourtantley.....I am thrilled to get to 2 years with mine and anything over that is gravy....I have only had a few reach 3

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I have no clue what it could have been, but I'd agree that 28 months is not young for a rattie. I'm told the average life expectancy is 2-3 years old. I hope at least there's some comfort in knowing that.. :hugs:
