UGH!
So this stupid kid I used to work with adopted some rats almost a month ago (just before he got fired). I never even saw these rats, but I was told they were all boys... Guess who apparently can't sex a rat. No wonder he was freaking fired. :emb: :emb: :emb: :emb:
So of the 4 he thought were boys, only one was. But today he dropped off three very pregnant rats. One looks so pregnant my guess is honestly 25 babies!!!
I don't know anything about pregnant females, or babies. I'm really hoping mom will take really good care of them, but the good news is that the store will take them to the vet if its needed. I wont be surprised if we have babies in the morning. The moms are so little, I dunno how old they are, but they look like babies.
So there is a lot we can't do- I can't bring them home with me (If I do that then the store wont cover any vet costs, and I can't afford any sort of major surgery)
We can't really mess with them so much, I will be able to check for milk bellies and what ever, but I can't give them all the attention they should get at this age.
What I can do- Watch for signs of distressed labor, I don't know what these would be tho. I can check everybody several times a day for milk bellies, and to be sure they aren't being rejected. I can supplement with veggies, and so I need to know whats best.
Any anything else that would be helpful.

And I brought dad home, cause he looked so lonely with out his harem.

My thoughts exactly!!!!!
I am suddenly so aware of why everyone hates pet stores. I'm really glad he got fired, but we are looking at possibly 60 babies!

All of the girls will be adopted out, meaning we will find them good homes and they wont be food. But the boys will probably be added to stock, so there isn't much I can do at that point (we only keep boys in stock). I'm going to try throwing a fit... If I cry Tom might let me adopt all of them out in pairs... or it could backfire and he could tell me to just let them be.
And as far as I know there is not a rescue that would take them in any where near me. The closest to me are in South Dakota and Nebraska (both at least 8 hours away)

I've been there, 3 litters at once :( My girl only had 22 babies between them, we were quite lucky I suppose considering how many more it could have been. Good luck.

Rats make great moms so I wouldn't worry much. If it's a big litter and mom has a hard time, she'll "clean up" any sick one or runts in order to allow the strong ones to survive.
The socializing everyday will surely help.

12 eepers born last night!. They all had good milkbellies when I checked on them. I also replaced the nesting material because it was gross and I didn't want them to have to snuggle in it... Momma doesn't really trust me yet, but she did enough to let me pick up one of the eepers to check him over, and let me scratch her head.
I'm not entirely convinced that both of the other 2 are preggers. One is for sure, but one of the other little girls just isn't pudgy.. I don't seee how she isn't, but who knows.
Thanks for the advice... I'm a worst possible senario kind of person, but she seems to be a really good mom.

I hope momma and the younguns are doing well...hopefully momma will do all the work and do it well without any complications coming up. Keep us updated on the other two possible mommas. And give the eepers lots of little kisses from me
