Hi Everyone...

I reacently had to put my eldest girl down from a mammery tumor. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I have 5 other girl rats and we all JUST adjusted to the loss. The girls started comming out again and waning to play with me again. Everyday I do a tumor check, last night they where all fine, This morning when I left for work they all came and gave me kisses just fine. 8 hours later when I came home there was blood everywhere, the ceiling, curtin, wall, floor and cage table. There was so much blood I thought one had died. After a fast head count I took them out one by one. It was then I discovered the now oldest had a rather large lumb (about a thumb size)under her right front paw and she was covered in blood. on closer inspection I noticed there was another lumb beside her right ear and the blood was comming from her ear.
After a couple hours of freaking out and crying for my little girl I started asking WHY!!
How is it I have had 2 girls with tumors in less then 2 months??? Am i doing something wrong?? Can i stop this from occuring in my other babies??? Is it somehow contageus??? I've done all the reasurch and know more about my girls then I do about my cats.....So i turn to you.....
What am i doing wrong?? I spot clean their cage 3 times a day. One a week it comes apart and in the shower then air dry. My girls also get to play in their bath at this time. I use pet friendy products in my entire house. Their bedding is shreaded paper, their litter yesterdays news, their hammocks made from old jeans that i wash every week, Their bedding is stripes of material with no fray ends that I hand wash and air dry, they get changed 3 times aday. They only eat the rat blocks and fresh fruit to keep them cool in this heat. Fresh water 3 times a day from 3 different bottles. I have them out all the time and they even love one of my cats. The girls are all part of my family and if im doing this to them i need to know...please help......

Unfortunately, sometimes these things just happen. That's not very comforting I know. But it sounds like you're taking amazing care of your girls. *hugs*

A lot of tumors seem to be aggravated by hormones, so spaying does help, especially with mammary tumors but also with other sorts including PT.

What you describe with your girl and the blood coming from her ear doesn't sound like anything I've experienced before, though. It must have been terrifying. I'll leave it up to folks with more experience to diagnose that one...

Catfood had just turned 19 months, Mittens is 17months now :( Catfood was suppose to have been my husbands but I fell for her and took over. Ever since that second I bought books and learned everything I could to help them in any way. This was my last ditch atempt...

Females are prone to mammary tumours. Nothing can prevent them. A spay significantly decreases the chances of developing one. 1 and a half is usually the age they start. It really sucks. I'm so sorry you are struggling with this.
I will move this to the health section.

I've had the same trouble - once Lady and Griff got tumors in the EXACT same place as each other, within a month or two of each other. Then Curly got one this year, and Lady followed with one a month or two later...than another the next week! and these girls get treated like princesses - it's not your fault, it just depends on the Rat. My girls Tuppy and Queenie never had any, but others are just ridiculously prone to them.

So sorry this is happening to you; it's so difficult :sad3:
